It starts with the lake. Silver Lake is a quiet, peaceful lake near Hiawatha National Forest. Private, undeveloped lakes with good size and water quality are harder and harder to find. There are lots of lakes in the Upper Peninsula, and some of them have character. Silver is one of these, and it comes centered in 350 acres of good timberland and is fed by a fast flowing spring, a seasonal waterfall, and a small stream. There appear to be springs in the lake as well as there is a strong flow out of the lake. I asked for and received some comments about the property from the owner who clearly love it and describe it well, so I`ve included their comments here.

The surrounding land is primarily a sugar maple forest with some aspen and cedars around the lake. This property was purchased from a timber company 13 years ago, and all of the surrounding land adjacent to the property for miles to on each side and for as much as 6-8 miles to the north is still owned by one timber company. This large area is crisscrossed with a web of two-track logging roads. All if it except for the occasional private parcels is enrolled in "CFR", the Commercial Forest Reserve, and is open to the public for hunting and fishing. Springtime woods

There are occasional rock outcrops and ridges with a variety of forest cover, lowlands and streams that provide a variety of habitat for deer, black bear, wolves, beaver, otter, mink, fisher, martin, ruffed grouse, wild turkeys, eagles, ducks and many varieties of songbirds.

A mile and a half to the east lays the western border of the Hiawatha National Forest, a vast and mostly unbroken block of land extending from near Lake Superior almost to Lake Michigan. It is also open to the public for outdoor recreation. In short, this property adjoins more wild land for hunting, cross country skiing, horseback riding, snowmobiling, and general wandering than you will ever be able to use, and virtually all of it is available for your hunting, fishing, photography and wilderness outdoor recreation. Every season has its pleasures and discoveries, for example the Alger Ice Caves are an unexpected find in the Hiawatha Forest just a few miles to the east.

Most of the north and south shore of Silver Lake is high, timbered, buildable land, with wetlands primarily at the east and west ends of the lake and some tumbled ridges and valleys to the north and west. I often see eagles or osprey, and usually see whitetail deer. Nearby rivers and streams offer excellent brook trout stream fishing and were a favored and little known, secret fly fishing location for John Volker, local writer, judge and fisherman of note. The property is about 30 miles from Marquette and 25 miles from Munising. It is three and a half miles from the Marquette County Line and 8 or 9 miles as the crow flies from Lake Superior to the north. Half a mile to the east the State of Michigan maintains a scenic park at the magnificent falls on the Laughing Whitefish River. The Laughing Whitefish River flows into Laughing Whitefish Lake, and half the lake was gifted to The Nature Conservancy and is now preserved forever. This is a wild area for a location so close to the largest cities of the U.P. You will see moose, deer, black bear, fisher, martin and, if you are lucky or good, perhaps a wolf.

The City of Munising, 25 miles by road from the property, lies at the southwestern end of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The park features spectacular hiking trails and views over Grand Island, 12 Mile Beach, and the rock grottoes and sandstone features of the Pictured Rocks.

Munising has groceries, supplies, hospital services, a deep-water harbor on protected Munising Bay, a golf club, and a variety of restaurants.

Silver Lake offers Walden-like privacy with civilization less than 30 minutes away over excellent, all weather roads in Marquette, the U.P`s largest city. "Civilization" means when you want it there`s a modern library, playhouse-on-the-bay, Northern Michigan University with Division I sports (hockey), museums with history of the north shore, iron mines and the Great Lakes, - and some restaurants that will surprise you. Friendly, talented, well-traveled people settled here because they know. Deer feed on your doorstep. It`s Northern Exposure with comforts and convenience. You`ll tell your friends that when they come to visit you will do something with them that they`ll talk about the next time you get together, and they will! Let%27s mountainbike it

Sawyer International Airport with scheduled jet service and the excellent Red Fox 18 hole golf course with watered fairways is just 20 miles to the west. Sawyer Airport`s proximity to this property is a real plus for owners whose primary home is distant from the U.P.

Deeded, recorded access is from North Rumley Road, a plowed county road that runs three miles due north from the crossroads town of Rumley. The county does not maintain the road beyond Saari Road as there are no year round residents beyond that point, so the last half mile is a county road, but is not improved. Access continues over a good gravel/dirt logging road running easterly and looping around (mostly well back) from the south and east borders of the property.

Electric power and phone are to Saari Road, less than a mile from the closest logical building site on the lake. There is plenty of beautiful land in the U.P., but often it lacks usable or even legal access. This by contrast is secluded but accessible private property.

Starting half a mile south of the property and extending east and west there is a large area of open farm fields and farms, something of a surprise here in the heavily forested U.P. Locally grown fruits and vegetables are available in season, and the farm fields are much used by the large deer herd in the area. Historic Campsite

Fishing is good for northerns and largemouth bass, and there are perch and other panfish. To the best of my knowledge there has never been a stocking program at Silver Lake and a fish management plan should be able to produce an outstanding fishery in this sizeable lake with abundant, well-aerated spring water.

Existing zoning is Timber Production. The intent of this district is to provide a moderate level of residential and recreational use with emphasis on timber management. Large private waterfront recreational parcels such as this are purchased primarily for seasonal residential cottages, hunting/fishing lodges, and to hold for future appreciation, use and development.

The owner has considered three possible building sites: Probably the best for year round use because of its proximity to the country road system of plowed roads is perched on a rock ridge on the south edge of the lake about two thirds of the way towards the west end. It has a commanding northeasterly view of the lake 60 feet below. An owner could remove some trees below this site which would further enhance the view. Springs feed the lake

A second location, the site of the old Peter White camp, is directly across the lake on a sandy, wooded knoll about 15 feet above the lake, with water on two sides. An inlet curls around the back of this site.

The third site is a quarter mile to the east on the same side of the lake. It appears to have been cleared years ago and is still primarily open with grass and scattered pin cherry trees. The first two locations have already received preliminary review and approval by the LMAC District Health Department for septic systems.

The North Country Hiking Trail (NCT) runs along the southerly edge of the property and the local Association of the North Country Trail Hikers maintains an insurance policy for the benefit of the landowners who own property crossed by the trail. The NTC is a non-motorized hiking trail, which crosses portions of seven northern states
