THE Superior Beach East of Grand MaraisExceptional Lake Superior waterfront east of Grand Marais as described here by one who knows it best: the owner, whose family has loved and preserved this land since the 1920's. He writes: "This extraordinary site features a beach that has been accurately described as the most beautiful beach in the UP. Unsurpassed in its depth, this 750-foot wide stretch of grassy dunes offers vast breathtaking panoramas of sand and blue water with no sign of human presence as far as the eye can see. In other words, it offers unequaled privacy. "Protected on both sides by State land, this property is the only private holding on nearly two miles of Lake Superior frontage. An astoundingly large expanse of dune and beach to the water's edge (at least 350 feet) provides complete protection from bank erosion. The beach is pure sugar sand with small stones where the forward edge is washed by the surf. It offers exceptional agate hunting, ease of walking, and absolute solitude. "Above the spectacular dunes covered with ferns, wildflowers, and grasses rises a fifty-foot vegetated bluff leading to the wooded highlands that constitute the remainder of this magnificent 18-plus acre property. The wooded highland site is as private as the beach below, as the Lake Superior State Forest borders it on both sides. The property is high and dry, and is protected by the bluff and by the mature trees from the lake storms. It lends itself perfectly to a peaceful and private family or retirement retreat. A key and very rare feature of the woods are the mature red and white pines dating to well over a century in age. Surrounded by majestic pines, as well as oaks, maples, birches, and aspen, one feels totally secluded and serene, as one gazes through the trees to the endless vista of beach and Lake Superior below. "Only the whisper of the lake breeze through the branches and the song of birds disturb the remarkable calm. The property has a rich abundance of wildlife and native plants, including bracken ferns, arbutus, and wintergreen. I have spent many pleasurable hours bird watching, picking blueberries, and taking photographs in the woods. "Easy access is provided by a private road as well as by the Coast Guard Line Road, both leading to paved County Road 407 (which has year-round access) half a mile from the property. A seasonal grocery store is available near the property, on County Road 407. Newberry, 23 miles to the south, provides most community services, including hospital care. The scenic harbor community of Grand Marais, along Lake Superior, is only 15 miles to the west, and offers such services as supermarkets, restaurants, shops, accommodations, and a museum. Grand Marais is also the eastern entrance to the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. "Utilities can be readily obtained, for they exist only half a mile from the property, and the intervening land is sand, well suited to underground wires. THE SURROUNDING AREA "The property is in an area along Lake Superior known as Deer Park, which is rich in natural and cultural heritage. It is one of the most remote and undeveloped portions of the UP, and therefore its natural beauty is among the most pristine. The area consists of lakes and woods, trout streams, and sand hills, but the most dramatic natural resource is Lake Superior itself. Whether you are canoeing on one of the small inland lakes, fly fishing in the Two Hearted River, berry picking on the sand plains, or driving a jeep on an old fire line - Lake Superior's influence is always felt. Deer Park lies between Grand Marais and Whitefish Point, a region traditionally known as Lake Superior's Shipwreck Coast for it has claimed hundreds of ships. Most recent was the historic shipwreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald (1975), the freighter immortalized in Gordon Lightfoot's famous song. From the late 1800s through the 1930s Deer Park was a small community adjacent to the Deer Park Lifesaving Station, which mounted many well-documented and legendary rescues. When I was growing up during the 1950s, coast guard and lighthouse service retirees often shared stories of their rugged life at Deer Park or other nearby coast guard properties, such as Crisp Point. "In the 1920's, Deer Park became a popular destination for visitors and seasonal residents seeking a quiet and leisurely existence. Probably the primary draw was fishing--including bass, pike and perch from area lakes, lake trout and whitefish from Lake Superior, and brook trout from the Two Hearted River, commemorated in a famous short story by Ernest Hemingway. Muskallonge Lake, a short walk from my property, has long been central to the Deer Park experience. Campers, fishermen, and cottage owners all treasure this beautiful lake, which has always attracted enthusiasts of low impact boating, fishing, and sailing. OWNERSHIP HISTORY My great uncle was one of the early adventurers attracted from industrialized central Ohio to the remote and tranquil region of Deer Park. In 1924 he acquired a considerable amount of acreage extending from the eastern shore of Muskallonge Lake to Lake Superior. His annual excursions to Deer Park from his home in Ohio started a much-beloved tradition in my family that continues today. In about 1925 my relatives (including my then teenage father) constructed three cottages on Muskallonge Lake, all having fireplaces hand built with Lake Superior stone."The only Lake Superior frontage still in private hands from my great uncle's original acquisition is the property now offered for sale. Although my great uncle considered building a cottage on the site, and established the private road that now traverses state forest to terminate on our land, the property has remained miraculously untouched." Well said! I would add only this small comment. If you buy it, use your stewardship wisely. Protect this lovely land for those who will follow. $1,200,000 More Photos Click on any thumbnail to view a larger image!
