There Is a Cabin in the Pines

What a perfect log cabin for a home away from home, your “base of operations” for play and exploration in the U.P.!

“Pine Crest, the cabin on the hill,” has easy year round access off M28 between Munising and Marquette.

Munising has world-class natural assets: Pictured Rocks National Park and Grand Island, an island park in Munising Bay, part of the Hiawatha National Forest. Marquette has Division I sports at NMU (hockey); restaurants that will surprise you, a first class regional hospital and all city services including scheduled jet service.

This 2 bedroom plus sleeping loft, 1 1/2 bath, 935 square foot log cabin is clean, sharp, and beautifully finished, ready to use right now. It's the “Not So big House” concept (comfortable small spaces brought to a high level of detail and finish) and this proves it works for log homes too. It feels much larger than it is with a full, beautifully finished lower level family room with fireplace and views back into the forest. It was finished by a superb craftsman to a high level of detail for home-in-the-woods comfort and minimal, easy maintenance.

The exterior walls are log with interior walls of pine, floors are pine boards upstairs, ceilings are pine with inlaid maple downstairs (see the photo under “more photos”), and the stairs are of curly maple. There is Mexican tile at the lower entry, an outside patio with picnic table and Wolmanized stairs to the opening below in the woods. A concrete sidewalk with low level copper lighting flanks the east side by the flagpole, there’s a satellite dish in place, the driveway is paved and there is a lower level pad for additional parking. It is built on a six acre (5.98a) parcel. For additional details click here.

Right across the street the State of Michigan has a public beach with white sand and a launching ramp for your boat on Deer Lake, a 266-acre, 72 foot deep, very scenic, excellent fishing lake. Close at hand are hundreds of square miles of “CFA” timberland lands where public access for hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation is allowed by law. The Brownstone Inn 4 1/2 miles to the east is one of the best restaurants in this area.

There is also a large block of federal Hiawatha National Forest land just to the Southeast with hundreds of square miles of unbroken forest, so you will never lack for places to hike, camp, snowshoe, cross country, or snowmobile. It has some very unusual features including the Alger Ice Caves, Laughing Whitefish Lake, and Laughing Whitefish Falls.

3 1/2 miles to the east on M28 there’s a State Launching Facility on Lake Superior where you can launch your boat for excellent offshore fishing on the big lake (really an inland sea) or day tours around Grand Island and the Pictured Rocks. This is wonderful sea kayak water. Huge rocks, some the size of a house, lie clearly visible up to 50 feet below the surface in the crystal clear water. Kayaking has become extremely popular in this area, and for good reason. If you haven’t gotten into that yet local outfitters offer instruction with guided tours of the Pictured Rocks and all the right equipment provided.

Munising Bay is great boating water, probably the safest on Lake Superior because of the many islands and bays that offer shelter if the wind kicks up. Want a fabulous Lake Superior sand beach for swimming? The State of Michigan beach an absolutely spectacular beach few miles to the east at the mouth of the AuTrain River, and the warm river water lets you swim in the surf of the big lake. (Both the river and Deer Lake provide warm water swimming. Lake Superior is for the tough ones.)

In addition to your personal use, this is a great little rental property with exposure to and easy access from M28. The historically low interest rates right now make both ownership and rental easy and affordable.

It is offered unfurnished, but if you want it with the furnishings ready to go, and I think you will, the owner says the furnishings are negotiable as a package excepting only the personal items.

In summary: Pine Crest is on a plowed road for year round use, has attractive style, interiors finished to a high level of detail with interesting, comfortable spaces, low maintenance and easy access to the coastal towns and wild lands of the U.P. What more do you want?
