Dunes, Home & 1525 Feet Lake Superior at Big BayBeach lovers, dune lovers: here is your 100% property! And if you're a lover of birds and wildlife as well, so much the better. This is an end-of-the-road fifteen hundred twenty-five feet of pure sand beach frontage on Lake Superior, beach grass blowing in the wind and pines behind. That's a lot of sand beach to own these days, and together with the 175 acres protecting your viewscape it represents a whole lot of wonderful privacy and the peace that comes from living in close proximity with nature. There are views from every room and the unusual and wonderful feature is that there are equally interesting views in both directions. To the north is Lake Superior, the greatest of the Great Lakes; to the south, off the back decks and from most of the rooms, there's a commanding view over a marsh that has large open water areas teeming with wildlife. Ducks, geese, sandhill cranes, blue herons and even an occasional white pelican trade in and out as weather and seasons cycle. A doe and two fawns regularly come to drink from the lake and live behind the house. The distant edge is large white pines, and the adjacent marsh edge below your deck is rimmed with Michigan holly. This is big property and you own pretty much as far as the eye can see in every direction. There are no houses in that view either except for a few in the far distance, across the bay. This is a sunrise and sunset property with great views of both and the photos below and in the slideshow are intended to capture a taste of that. In the distance to the west you can also see the rugged and beautiful Huron Mountains. ![]() You are not, however, isolated far into the wilderness - you'll pass a mile and a half of beach lined with homes on the drive in and the little coastal town of Big Bay is just a mile away. It is an unusual and wonderful setting and I have not seen another like it. This land can be a sanctuary for you and a legacy for your children. The new cedar home has about 2,000 square feet (1,976, to be exact), a not-so-big but open and roomy-feeling three bedroom home with 3 screened porches, a kitchen with birdseye cabinets, large living room with stone fireplace, library with windows and skylights (3 skylights in all), an office overlooking the marsh, sauna, and from the living areas in front a panoramic view over the sandy arc of the bay. It was built with care to be low maintenance, trouble-free living. This is a first home, designed and built to be enjoyed in comfort year round, a heavily insulated, cedar sided, 2 BR, 2 1/2 bath home with large decks all around, a sauna off the entryway, cathedral ceilings, and an attached two-car garage. If you'd like more detail you can view room dimensions, which are attached here. ![]() The entire 1st floor has #2 cherry flooring and the bedroom above is carpeted. All the doors and cabinets are Birdseye maple and the trim is clear maple. Ceilings are cedar. Countertops are granite. Living here means you also have high speed Internet, fire protection, electric service, a community with sailboat races, horseshoe contests, an active baseball diamond, tennis and frequent gatherings and events. What would life be like if you owned this property? Read some wonderful reflections about that which the owners sent me today: "A Day at the End of the Road". Just behind is a second two-car garage, which currently holds a boat and a tractor with snowblower, and an office or guest area, playroom or studio above with a great view down that wild, private shoreline. You can click here to see the dimensions of the rooms and decks. There's a Kohler 7500 generator for emergency power, which is not used much any more as the power to Big Bay has been much improved. Nearby Lake Independence has 2,071 acres of surface water and was an ancient bay of Lake Superior. As the big lake receded it left dunes that now support a lovely open forest of white pine, red oak and white birch carpeted with bracken fern and trailing arbutus. Between the dunes are depressions and wetlands with Blue Flag iris. ![]() These old beach ridges offer summer hiking and winter cross-country ski trails that are wild and beautiful. The area is alive with birds, waterfowl and wildlife including deer, black bear, moose and wolves. The land parcels that make up this ownership and a brief description are attached here, and also a USGS map with the approximate boundaries marked. Big Bay has restaurants, groceries, gift shops, services and amenities. Its Inn was the setting for Alfred Hitchcock's Anatomy of a Murder staring Jimmy Stewart, Lee Remic, and the music of Duke Ellington. Few communities can match its unparalleled access to both wilderness and conveniences. The nearby Huron Mountains are rock and forest, waterfalls and trout streams, trails and long, spectacular views. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Grand Island are an hour and a half to the east. Marquette, the U.P.'s largest city, with jet service, the U.P.'s regional hospital, Northern Michigan University, shopping, and great restaurants are just 30 minutes to the south. ![]() Sailors and those who would like to be, take note: a State of Michigan Harbor of Refuge to the west on the Lake Superior shore, complete with a mooring basin for sailboats and an excellent ramp for power boats, is less than a two miles from your back door. I see a lot of beautiful property and great settings and it takes a lot to turn my head, but I could imagine living here. This is a place with awesome and varied beauty, and I've included lots of photos to give you a taste of it with views of and from the property in all seasons of the year, in no particular order.
